Can you send used books to inmates?
Some important things to remember when sending books, magazines or newspapers to an inmate: Do not send more then 3 books at a time. All books must be new and soft cover (no hardcover or spiral bound) Use the inmate’s name and ID number with the facility mailing address.
Can inmates receive packages?
Some inmates also receive shoes, sweats or underwear in care packages. Sometimes things like guitar picks, headphones, art supplies and books can be sent to prisoners. The user will then be given options for care packages that are approved for that inmate and that facility.

Does Barnes and Noble send books to inmates?
You cannot send books or magazines to an inmate yourself. You must arrange for them to be sent directly from a bookstore to the jail or prison where the inmate is currently being held. A shipping fee may be charged, but major chains such as Barnes and Noble, Waldenbooks, Borders and Amazon provide this service.

You can donate books at a variety of locations in your community, including:
- The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army accepts used goods donations, including hardback and paperback books.
- Goodwill. Goodwill accepts used book donations for their resale stores.

Do prisoners get Christmas presents?
All Bureau of Prison’s facilities have visits on Christmas and all the other holidays. Only the lucky few in prison get visits on Christmas. For most inmates, the only times they see their relatives at Christmas is when their family members are locked up with them.
Can inmates get pictures of themselves?
You can send photos of family members, but do remember that prisoners are not allowed photographs of themselves, and that includes family snapshots that include them. Photographs of an explicit or pornographic nature would not be allowed. Certain prisoners may not be permitted to have photographs of children.
Do inmates receive mail everyday?
Likewise, prison mailroom staff have the ability to read every incoming piece of mail. While they do search every piece of mail for contraband, they don’t read every letter. Can you bring food to prisoners?
Prisoners must obtain prior approval before visitors are allowed to bring in any items for them/or post any items to them, except for the items listed below. If a visitor is bringing in or sending an approved item for a prisoner, they must give the item/s to, or post the items to, Visitor Reception Centre staff.
Do inmates know who sends them money?
It has to be sent to their fund or account. My own experience is that no, inmates may not know who sent them money or even if money has been sent. They get a quarterly balance sheet with deposits and withdrawals but as far as being notified when and by who, no they don’t usually get notified.
How long does it take for an inmate to get a care package?
10 days is the usual time to receive a care pack, but may take up to 21 days depending on the facility. Inmate package inspections and lock downs can sometimes delay the delivery of items.
